Discussion #1: Chapter One and Two - Summary

This week (Febuary 1st-7th), my literature circle group finished reading the first two chapters of Ingo. I was assigned the role of the summarizer for chapter one and two.

In chapter one, Sapphire (Sapphy), the narrator, started the story by describing the time when her father, Mathew Trewhella, told her the story of the Zennor mermaid, a wood carving inside the Zennor Church. According to the story, the mermaid and a man by the same name, Mathew Trewhella, were in love but, as the mermaid was a Mer person, she could not live away from the water. Therefore, Matthew left his family and went to the Mer place to live with her.

The story then returned to the present time when Sapphy and her family were at the Midsummer Eve party. At this party, everyone gathered and had fun by the bonfire. Once they reached home, Sapphy’s dad wanted to go to the shore at the cove nearby. Although the cove did not belong to them, it was not known to many people and but it was a place Sapphy, her older brother, Conor, and their dad frequently visited. Sapphy’s mother, Jennie, protested as she did not want her husband to go to the cove at that late hour. The situation escalated as Mathew wanted Jennie to accompany him to the shore. Again, Jennie refused as she did not want to leave the children, Sapphy and Conor. Ignoring Jennie’s objection, Mathew left to go on his own.

At the beginning of chapter two, Mathew did not return home till eight o’clock the next morning. Mathew was out at sea in his boat all night by himself. As a result, Mathew and Jennie started arguing. Jennie had a secret reason for not ever going out to sea, but this was not clearly explained.

The next night, Sapphy and Conor went to visit their friend’s house to see their puppies. When they returned home, they realized at once something was wrong. They learnt that their father had disappeared. The family waited for him to return but eleven o’clock that night, Mathew still did not appear. That behaviour was unlike Mathew. He would normally let his family know of his whereabouts when he went out at night. It was unusual that Mathew did not show up. Mathew remained missing the next day. Neighbours, friends, as well as the coastguard, were quickly notified. After five weeks, Mathew continued to be missing. Jennie gave up hope on Mathew turning up and believed that he must have had an accident. But, Conor and Sapphy refused to accept that. They swore that they would continue to search for their dad.
